Astrophysics professor awarded space telescope observation time

Prof. Anna Nierenberg was awarded observing time in the first year of James Webb Space Telescope observations in order to use gravitational lenses to measure the properties of dark matter. JWST is the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope and observing time is awarded on a competitive basis. JWST will be the first telescope to look into infrared wavelengths with high spatial resolution imaging, something that is only possible thanks to its large mirror and the fact that it will be in orbit far from Earth.  This ability to see into the infrared makes it possible to measure tiny fluctuations in gravitational lenses caused by dark matter structure which Nierenberg will use to test dark matter models.
