Galactic Dynamics and Archeology, Star Clusters, Machine Learning, Milky Way Simulations

Bio:
Binod Bhattarai is a Physics graduate student working with Professor Sarah Loebman. He is interested in the dynamics of the stars in the Milky Way’s disk. Right now, he is particularly interested in tracking the position and velocity of the stars born in star clusters. I want to understand how long star clusters can be reconstructed using the position, velocity, and chemistry information. To investigate this, he uses high-resolution galaxy simulations, observational data from GAIA and APOGEE, and utilize Machine Learning Techniques. Ultimately, he hopes to understand where the Sun formed and look for its solar siblings to get a greater perspective on where life could have formed.
