Special Physics Seminar: Prof. Linqing Wen (University of Western Australia) - "Discovery of Gravitational Waves"

September 9, 2016 - 9:00pm

Title:   Discovery of Gravitational Waves

We are at an exciting time of gravitational wave discoveries. The first detection of gravitational wave signal was made in September 2015, followed by a second detection in December 2015. Both gravitational wave sources have been identified as mergers of binary stellar-mass black holes. In this talk, I will give an overview of the gravitational wave detections and discuss prospects of joint gravitational wave and electromagnetic observations.

Biography:

Prof. Wen received her PHD in Physics from MIT in 2001. She led several GW signal-processing innovations in GW signal processing for audio-band GW detection and nano-hertz GW detection, and she is the lead of the UWA GW astronomy team. Prof. Wen has been directly associated with the LIGO project.
