Xu Chosen One of Four New Council Members of Biophysical Organization

Professor Jing XuPhysics Professor Jing Xu has been elected to the Council of the Biophysical Society. She will help guide the organization of more than 7,500 members who teach and conduct research in colleges, universities, laboratories, government agencies and industries around the world.

Xu’s three-year term begins in February 2023. Before then, she will participate in the annual meeting abstract-sorting process to determine the scientific programming of next year’s Annual Biophysical Society Meeting.

The Biophysical Society, founded in 1958, is a professional, scientific society established to lead development and dissemination of knowledge in biophysics. The society promotes growth in this expanding field through its annual meeting, publications, and committee and outreach activities, according to its website.

Xu is one of four new council members elected this year. Council members have many responsibilities, including determining policies, approving budgets and setting the Society’s mission.

“I’m honored to be elected a council member. The Biophysical Society is a tremendous organization. The society has been my professional home for over 16 years and has provided me with great opportunities and resources for scientific growth and career development,” Xu said. “As a council member, I will work diligently with others to serve the society members and to ensure the continued success of the society by continuing to promote scientific excellence, diversity and inclusivity.”

Xu’s lab researches topics including molecular motors, motility and cytoskeletons, single-molecule biophysics, active matter and optical trapping. Xu is a product of the University of California system, having earned her Ph.D. at UC Santa Barbara. She joined the UC Merced School of Natural SciencesDepartment of Physics in 2011 and is a member of the Health Sciences Research Institute.
